The Detroit Latin School is all about the pursuit of Excellence. In the classroom, the studio, the stage and on the field of strenuous sport, Latinians are challenged to discover their limits and then encouraged to push beyond. It's literature-based curriculum, rooted in classical antiquity, is combined with advanced offerings in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, to create General Graduation Requirements among the nation's highest—exceeding both Common Core and International Baccalaureate benchmarks. LATIN's high standards are matched by a comprehensive program of academic student supports and, if necessary, the tutorial interventions required for success.
As a chartered Public School, LATIN is tuition-free and open to all “students of good character who are eager to learn and willing to work.” At LATIN, diversity is more than a policy at the center of our enrollment programs. It is an educational ideal at the core of our mission. Economic and cultural diversity is what will bring vitality to LATIN’s Socratic method of teaching and learning, creating the prism through which young Latinians will forever see the world and reflect on their place in it--enabling new and deeper understandings of personhood, friendship and community. Through an Informed Choice process, families are invited to learn more about the school’s expectations of both parents and students before making the decision to interview and apply. In the fall of '20, only 204 seats will be available in grades 5-7.
LATIN is not a training or vocational institution. Its distinctive school culture, its demanding program of liberal studies, including languages ancient and modern and a semester abroad, formal training in logic and rhetoric, and a variety of opportunities in the arts and athletics, are designed to prepare graduates for university and for the real business of living. It's college preparatory regime--comparable with the best suburban publics and independent academies--will provide young Detroiters with the cultural, intellectual and ethical foundations which will enable them to serve the world through their character and leadership.
